ACADEMIC TUTORING

Master the material and build your confidence.  Become an active participant in class discussions.  Develop skills to write effective laboratory reports and learn important problem-solving and test-taking skills that will help you in all of your subjects!

We believe there are three steps to success in chemistry:

Step 1: Subject Mastery
Chemistry is all around us – from fireworks to baking cakes; from ice-melting salt to ice cream making.  We work with students to make this subject comes alive and that they understand the chemistry behind why these things happen.  We discuss key concepts with our students using fun anologies and real-world examples.

Step 2:  Build Problem-Solving and Time Management Skills
One of the most difficult techniques in many subjects, and especially chemistry, is finding a successful entry point into a practice problem and then solving the problem effectively and quickly.  Remember, the question is always asking you about a chemistry concept that you know about (Step 1 above).  Very often, it is disguised.  We help students learn to decode and understand questions through paraphrasing, underlining key words and numbers, sketching, and writing down key equations.  Students develop skills which allows them to tackle multiple choice or multi-step problems and answer questions in a time-efficient and effective way.  Our students learn how to confidently show their work and maximize the number of correct points earned.

Step 3:  Practice makes Perfect
Through a combination of applying your understanding of important chemical concepts and through building strong problem-solving skills, you can become a outstanding chemistry student.  Now the key is to tackle practice problems.

Study guides and memorizing facts from chemistry textbooks are limiting.  We work with students to effectively tackle practice problems, without being simply “homework helpers.” All of our students are given customized practice problem sets (and detailed explanations) that they can work on during sessions or independently at home.
